Same Lace, Different Pace

Posted by
Denny Jump (Bellevue, WA, United States) on 3 August 2010 in Plant & Nature.

This is the same bed of Queen's Lace but a differnt look slightly. And actually there will be one more image that I wil post in two days from now on August 5 - Sorry, but i am really interested in hearing your opinions.
So this is number 2 of 3 . Thank you.

Julie Brown from Indianapolis, United States

Denny, this one does not work as well as the first image. There is no place for my eye to go from the flowers in the foreground. Did you want most of the scene to be out of focus? At f18 you should have gotten more DOF. Sorry.

3 Aug 2010 5:10am

@Julie Brown: Hi Julie No problem I definitely appreciate this...what I had in mind was an image like the one Gary Hart on Glacier POint (I think) with the flower in focus in the foreground and the falls and sky colors in the distance fuzzed...but the f stop was probably different - I can't remember - becasue yes, I had it on f18 just to get a nice long exposure and I also did not have nearly the dramatic background to be able to blur...so yes I totally see what you are saying here. OMG wait until Thursday,s shopt - you will have tomorrow to recover :-) Thank You Julie I really appreciate this - I will remember this comment (I hope) the next time I try to do something like this.

Scott F. Schilling from San Martin, United States

I like the mix of green and white - cooler tones with the very warm sky! A nice mix!!

3 Aug 2010 5:51am

@Scott F. Schilling: Hi Scott - Thank you very much. I liked the colors as well. I think I need to slow down just a bit and think more about what I am doing and what is it that I really want. I tend to panic when the lighting is moving along and I don't want to lose that light.Thank you sir.

Bill Brown from California, United States

Denny, I agree with Julie, the first image is much nicer. In this case, the eyes are automatically drawn to the bright background. I graduated neutral density filter would work well in this situation.

3 Aug 2010 5:57am

@Bill Brown: I am chuckling and graoning as I read this Bill because one of my first thughts later that evening as I worked on these was "Hey, stupid, you should have used that ND Grad filter that you just received in the mail last week!" So, yes I totally agree with you and Julie - So thank you Thanks VERY much, Bill, this kind of critique really helps. Thanks Bill

k@ from Paris, France

I like that foreground a lot, very sweet.

3 Aug 2010 8:57am

@k@: Hi Karinne and Thank you - I was happy with that too. The sky was great at the time also. Thanks very much - Denny

Scene by Sharon Photography from Kingston, Ontario, Canada

I like that you captured the plant from an interesting angle and I love the soft focus on the beautiful sky - very peaceful scene

3 Aug 2010 10:37am

@Scene by Sharon Photography: Hi Sharon and thank you I liked the angle too, I need to work on some other factors but that's all part of the learning. Thanks again :-0

Phil David Alexander Morris from Saskatoon, Canada

I love this one also, tends to focus more with the incredible plant
growth and still have some of the wonderful lighting.

3 Aug 2010 1:09pm

@Phil David Alexander Morris: Thank you Phil David! I have some great suggestions to work with here too - this is what I like...as an older guy trying to learn, I don't have much time before I have to go see "The Principal"...

Julie Brown from Indianapolis, United States

Denny, I think the way you cropped this might be part of the problem. Or maybe a vertical wide angle shot would have shown more of the flower and sky. Remember you had that gorgeous sky to work with and an ND grad as Bill suggested could have helped to balance the scene. Everything looks chopped off in this image. You had a good idea to start with. Keep experimenting because that is how we learn!

3 Aug 2010 1:34pm

@Julie Brown: Thanks Julie and Yes, I really like the idea of the vertical wide angle. Now, with regard to the ND Grad...see my respnse to Bill...you will crack up or groan as I did...Thanks Julie I serioulsy appreciate this kind of critique...you guys are the tops!

Julie Brown from Indianapolis, United States

You are welcome, Denny. This kind of discussion is part of the fun of sharing on aminus3. Have you checked out Don Smith's post for today? He discusses when and how to include foreground elements.

3 Aug 2010 2:07pm

@Julie Brown: Not yet but I plan to for sure and Thank you Julie from all sincerity :-)

MARIANA from Waterloo, Canada

Lovely tones and mood . Pretty foreground !

3 Aug 2010 2:14pm

@MARIANA: Thank you Mariana - you are way too kind but I'll take it - Your work is fabulous!!!

Bettina from Los Angeles, United States

Very beautiful. I love the composition, the lace in the foreground and dotting into the distant depth of field. And gorgeous colors on the horizon.

3 Aug 2010 2:18pm

@Bettina: Thanks Bettina - I guess my heart was in the right place - I could have complsed it better but as Chevy Chase said in the opening scenes of "Christmas Vacation: "it's all part of the experience..."

Sunder from Chennai, India

Interesting shot..

3 Aug 2010 2:41pm

@Sunder: HI Sunder - Thank you very much - Denny

JJ from Jersey City, United States

Personally I prefer the first shot you posted of this, cool focus one the flower but the background is if anything a little distracting and course the eyes to roam a bit

3 Aug 2010 2:59pm

@JJ: Well we can't have roaming eyes now can we? But seriously I understand what you are saying - I just wish I had thought this through more calmly at first, but oh well. With the great and useful critiques I have received on this one, I will learn for sure. Criticism is not a bad thing at all unless it is rendered in mean-spirited way - which it is not on Aminus3...Thanks JJ :-)

Nigel from Avening, United Kingdom

Nicely focussed - with a 3D effect - yep I like it very much.

3 Aug 2010 3:57pm

@Nigel: Hi Nigel - Thank you very much. I really liked your little yellow cab today!

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

Perfect focus and exceptional light and colour.

3 Aug 2010 4:16pm

@Curly: Hello Curly and thank you so very much . I was fascinated by your image post of today - very interesting.. Thanks for dropping by :-)

Stephen Phillips from San Francisco, United States

Well titled and a clear companion to Sunday's post - yet with a markedly different feel and focal length. Nice work, Denny.

3 Aug 2010 6:21pm

@Stephen Phillips: Hi Stephen and thank you very much - one more to go in a few days. I really like yours for today!!

The MaJor from TM HooD, Iran

very nice mood of this shot..well framed

3 Aug 2010 8:08pm

Tede from Aubenas 07, France

I prefer the first, that this lack of clarity but the colors are beautiful. Good day.

3 Aug 2010 8:28pm

@Tede: HI Tede - thank you very much. Most everyone likes the first one too. There will be one more - the final version - on Thursday iof you care to look. Thanks very much.
BY THE WAY - I LOVE the Morgan you have today - is that Your Morgan??? I LOVE LOVE LOVE MORGANS!!!!

PD from Overland Park, Kansas, United States

Very nice - great DOF, and color of the sky. great job "working the scene".

3 Aug 2010 10:42pm

@PD: Hi PD - Thank you very much and may I say I love your photos on your blog they are awesome - thanks for dropping by

Steve Rice from Olympia, Afghanistan

The DOF is too shallow and there are too few blossoms. I prefer that long view with flowers stretching into the distance.

3 Aug 2010 11:28pm

@Steve Rice: Very good Steve thanks for this comment - most all have agreed with your assessment basically - I shall try to learn from this experience here. Thanks again.

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

I agree that the DoF may be a bit shallow, but I love the warm colors of the sky that contrast nicely with the lush landscape. Queen's Lace.....So that's what they're called! I'll need to remember that for a future post of mine.

Wild Mustang Photography from Carlisle, United States

Very pretty flowers and effects. They look like their dancing in the wind. The sunset looks so magical, very lovely Denny!

4 Aug 2010 4:11am

@Wild Mustang Photography: Hi Pam - thanks very much _ have a lot of learning to do.

Julie from Easton, United States

Ok, try this next time! Use a couple of different settings. Take a shot, change the F stop then shot again. You will find the right one, it just takes time! This pic in general I really like, the subject, background and colors! You do have a great eye, just keep trying different things till you get it right! Good luck buddy! We will have to meet up one weekend at the creek!

4 Aug 2010 4:15am

@Julie: Thanks Julie- gotcha - I like your suggestion. I probably should have thought about that. I will certainly remember the next time - thank you VERY much for this tip!!
