The End is Nearer

Posted by
Denny Jump (Bellevue, WA, United States) on 15 August 2010 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

In this part of the country, despite the incredible record heat that we had, I see small signs of summer loosening it's grip. The grasses turning brown, green trees beginning to loose their lusre and taking on a yellowish tinge and, oh yes of course, I saw the High School Marching band and Flag Teams on the practice field yesterday. THAT"S the most reliable sign that Autumn is approachiing!
Here in PA, Autumn usually doesn;t really show up until sometime between early and mid- October.

Nice shot, I love the lighting on this one.

Craig from Vacaville, California, United States

Yes, the lighting is very effective! Almost a back light! Also an effective title. This year has been unusually cool here. Can't say that I can complain though :0)

15 Aug 2010 8:10am

@Craig: Hi Craig - Thank you. I can see signs here but I also know that, typically, Septembers are usually delightful and Fall doesn't really come to stay until October - one year we were in our shirtsleeves at Thanksgiving which is unheard of back here. When we lived in San Diego, we had Thanksgiving dinner on the patio 9 times out of 10!

Nigel from Avening, United Kingdom

Just love the golden tones........

15 Aug 2010 8:14am

@Nigel: Hi Nigel - Thank you very much. Fortunately there was a field of amber toned grasses just to the left. Way beyond that on the far perimeter you may see green grass. Where I was sitting was sort of "mixed green and gold" and the sky was cooperative, complete with "god ray" so all was well. I thoroughly enjoyed your SSGB of today! Thank you very much for that. Cheers sir!

Scene by Sharon Photography from Kingston, Ontario, Canada

really lovely colours and tones in this photo - autumn is my favorite season ... with the exception it is followed, all too quickly, with winter. Here in Ontario, we have had the best summer in years ... hot, hazy, humid ... the three "h's" that make it summer - the things I dream about in February

15 Aug 2010 10:45am

@Scene by Sharon Photography: Hi Sharon Thank you and I know what you mean about winter. After spending 20 years in San Diego I actually have been thoroughly loving the four distinct seasons but yes, the winters do get on one's nerves, for me around late January of early-Feb. Keep it warm there because I have relatives (Windemuth, Wintermute) all over that are (my mom,s dad was Canadian - a Wintermute - all from around Ontarion region ) and I have always felt myself part of that. I need to drive up and "research" :-) Have a great day Sharon and thank you again!

Eric Cousineau from Sherwood Park, Canada

Outstanding light in this beautifull low angle shot Denny! Well done! ;-)

15 Aug 2010 1:55pm

@Eric Cousineau: Hi Eric - I hope you are doing well! Thank you very much for the comment. I was sitting cross-legged with the camera resting on the bag - I could have used my little gorilla pod which, by the way, really comes in handy at times - but I was too lazy to take it out of the bag :-) Have a great Sunday!

Shahryar from Isfahan, Iran

Susan from Sausalito, United States

There is something beautifully melancholy about the end of one season and the suggestion of another...you rich colors here say all that and the photograph is so fine, one can almost smell the change in the air.

15 Aug 2010 5:49pm

@Susan: Hi Susan and thank yu. Yes there was a cool wind blowing at the time as well - I was panicking at the intervals hoping that the flowers would stay stilll. It was cool too - that's different.

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

15 Aug 2010 6:14pm

@JOEMULLIGAN: Hi Joe - Thank you very much for dropping in! I just viewed many of you past images and I really do love your wild grasses series - I am not terribly knowledgeable but I know that I love them Your photos of this critical element of nature are just tremendous! Thank you so much for conveying them and I am really glad I visited your blog. I also loved the Blue Ridge Mountains scene you did a while back. They certainly ARE Blue :-) Thanks for your nice remarks here,as well. I will certainly look forward to visiting yours on a regular basis going forward. Too bad the cows ate all the flowers - that just isn't right! . All the Best - Denny Jump

@Mohsen: Hi mohsen -Thank you very much! :-)

Julie Brown from Indianapolis, United States

It does have a late-summer feel to it. I like the backlit flowers. The lighting is tricky here. You have a warm sky and a warm foreground, but you had to deal with the mid-ground-it looks like the trees have gone to black and lost detail. Did you use your GND?

15 Aug 2010 9:49pm

@Julie Brown: uh no

Stephen Phillips from San Francisco, United States

Splendid. As if we walked in 'Stings' fields of gold...

15 Aug 2010 10:05pm

16 Aug 2010 1:28am

@Becky: Well as far as I am concerned, if there was a daily prize for best image on Aminus3, your's showed take today's prize hands down. I laughed about that piece all afternoon. Good thing there's nobody else around but the cat!. Thanks Becky, very much. Back to work tomorrow unfortunately. But only 12 days and I get to fly out to SFO so I want to get through these next days quickly. Have a great week and thaks again Becky!

Tim from Ft. Worth, United States

i looked up easton because this looked like the gettysburg area. (gett's battlefield is mecca to me. i've been there four times since '94...i especially like harrisburg's civil war museum and Carlisle's war college museum, etc.) i love that area because it is so pretty. this shot of yours is very lovely. we just had a 20-or-so day consecutive 100 deg. streak ended today. ugh. supposed to get down to the low 70's tonite and tom. nite! hope fall is around the corner, for sure :)
