HI EVERYONE - THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENTS ON THIS IMAGE - I HOPE TO POST A NEW IMAGE, IF NOT SATURDAY, SUNDAY FOR SURE...THANKS AGAIN.
Skunk Cabbage and budding trees at Graver Arboretum, Bangor, PA. This is a wonderful arboretum which is owned and operated by the Muhlenberg College in Bethlehem, PA. I will post a few more images of this arboretum in the coming week or two. I hope you like this view.....Although the name Skunk Cabbage implies otherwise, in reality, they really don't have much of an odor at all.

- " We do not move forward from a middle opinion, which is undemocratic but mediocratic.
We advance from a creative passion "- (Edgar Morin)
- "To photograph is to hold one's breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It's at

::Words from Denny:
- My beliefs, and values, have always been strongly tied-to music, especially Jazz, and Blues.
- The following artists and lyrics seem to "sum-up" where my spirit resides:
EARTH WIND AND FIRE;
"HOLD ON TO YOUR SPIRIT,
ALWAYS FEEL YOUR SOUL....
HONOR THE MAGIC IN YOUR HEART"; Earth Wind and Fire
@rem_la: Oui, il semble être un véritable paradis pour les escargots, mais, curieusement, je n'ai jamais vu des escargots ici en Pennsylvanie. Merci rem_la!
Outstanding capture Denny! I especially like the various shades of green displayed in the image.

Really like your perspective here, and the way you get different layers of texture through the image. Also like the narrow format. Well done!

@franz: Hi Franz! Thank you so much - They are very attractive in the spring and summer! Cheers ;-)
My first thought about skunk cabbage was...RUN!! (on both counts - skunk, and cabbage). ;-) Nice shot.
12 May 2011 3:31pm
@B. Thomas: When you go to Montana and CO you probably see alot of it...doesn't smell until and unless you get your nose right down to the blossom when they are first cooming out in the spring...or so that's what I read on Wiki...;-) Thanks Barbara!
Ah, the skunk cabbage patch. Takes me back to girl scout days and camping.
12 May 2011 5:30pm
@LauraS: Yes Ma'am! That's the ticket! That's where I first learned about Skunk Cabbage - in the Boy Scouts on our camping trips up to the Soda Springs area! Thanks Laura ;-)
I love this down low angle of yours, putting me right into the patch. I have encountered this cabbage during hikes around Vancouver Island with my brother, and you are right, the olfactory impact is far less than one would imagine or the name would imply.
12 May 2011 6:01pm
@Rick: Hi Rick - Thank you so much!! Vancouver Island, how I would dearly love to visit there one day. I have a friend who works and lives around New Westminster but his family has property out on the island somewhere but I cannot recall exactly where..he goes there all the time. Thanks very much Rick!
@Olivier: Hi Olivier! Thank you very much for stopping by! I appreciate your kind comment as well ;-)
skunk cabbage often makes fine b&ws
12 May 2011 6:21pm
@john4jack: Hi Sir... Yes, I looked at it in B&W last evening when I was playing around with it but I think I had the leaves overexposed and the B&W did not look so good to me so I nixed it...Thanks Jack ;-)
this is such a wonderful photo, Denny - the lush greens are so beautiful!!
12 May 2011 6:50pm
@Scene by Sharon Photography: Hi Sharon - Thank you so much.....How are rehearsals going??
Fine composition & colour. Jezzz Denny I can smell it from here! When I was a kid we had skunk cabbage in the nearby woods & we sometimes took delight in running through it while whacking it with sticks. Boy would our mom's get mad!
12 May 2011 7:45pm
@Williams: I'll bet they did!! Thanks Paul...Laura and I were trading memories about our rememberances of this fine vegetation ;-)
I love this low PoV that you've used here to capture this cabbage. The pronounced "veining" in the leaves of the cabbage reveal some great textures. Interesting how they come up with these names sometimes.
12 May 2011 9:51pm
@Steven: Hi Steven - Thank you very much...I always liked something about these plants...just the look of them I guess..
Doesn't have that awful smell until you step on it or break it's skin in some way - oye ve!...so gross! Bangor is up near where I went to school, ESU. Great area....and lovely muted photo :)
13 May 2011 12:36am
@Nina: Well, don't step on them ;-) ...I know I know, there's always a samrtass in the crouwd...but I know you are right, that's what the write ups say on it too I have learned!!
Oh, fantastic Denny! This a wonderful composition and the low angle really sets off this carpet of cabbage amongst the trees. Do people eat skunk cabbage? Maybe it smells a bit skunky when it's cooked or something. Of course, I couldn't imagine eating anything that smelled like a skunk, but hey, people eat all sorts of things. LOL
13 May 2011 12:37am
@Jason Politte: Hi Jason - I don't think they eat it but as Nina has so correctly pointed out - if you step on these plants, especially when in bloom - you get a purdy nasty smell...Thanks for your comment!
wonderful photo! good low angle and perspective just over the cabbage leaves! the lush green colour tones is outstanding as well!
13 May 2011 1:05am
