Self Portrait

Posted by
Denny Jump (Bellevue, WA, United States) on 30 May 2011 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

Since today is Memorial Day in the States, this image really should pull "double-duty" and allow me to give my grattitude to all the fallen soldiers of all the wars. Those who gave their lives so that we could indeed walk through a park or a city or even a cemetery and think of their sacrifices and bid a word of thanks to them for what they have done. So, Barbara and I did as we often do on days like this and we visited a local cemetery to pay tribute to our nation's deceist war veterans. All of them are heroes to me. I was lucky, very very lucky, I lost friends in Vietnam, but I came home in December, 1968 basically unscathed after a year in that war. Nowdays, our military women and men don't spend one tour, they have to spend two and sometimes three tours or more in their war zone assignments. I don't know how they do it, but I do know that anyone who has seen a war first hand wants no part of new wars...Yet, new wars keep coming.

My hope, as a Vietnam Veteran, is that we can put an end to war and truly work for peace . What dream could be more worthwhile? A dream that my grandchildren and yours can live in a world that is tolerant...for in my heart I believe that tolerance and respect for life is where it all begins.
I wish you peace!

Phil David Morris 2011 from Saskatoon,, Canada

You seem to stand immortal in this self-portrait, and I love all the flags,
showing the viewer at first glance your wonderful pride in your country,
and everything you value. The softening at the edges help to show the
people your great personality shining through, for all to see, retaining
your astonishing kindness which is one of your best and most touching
traits. There are some amazing self portraits today, Sharon, and yours
of course, and POBSB had one of the most astonishing today.

A strong and proud self-portrait; and I love the soft, warm light. Very fine hopes and dreams you express today, Denny. A lovely tribute to Memorial Day and all it represents. (In Australia, the equivalent day would be Anzac Day - 25 April.)

So nice to see you Denny & in such an appropriate setting for the day. It seems sad to me that so many in America have forgotten or have never known the real meaning of Memorial Day I echo what Phil has said for I don't think it could be any better put. Cheers,

30 May 2011 2:46pm

@Williams: Hi Paul - Thank you so much!! I quite agree...I am not really a "Flag waver" but I certainly appreciate the sacrifice that military people give to their countries.

Kenny from Eastsound, United States

Great photo, Denny! You've done a real nice job of combining self-portrait day with Memorial Day. It's nice to be able to finally see the guy who writes all these clever notes.

Hi dear brother, I love the way the tree seems to act like a canopy sheltering you. The colors of our flag really stand out. I am not surprised at the other folks who have commented on your loving, caring ways. You really are the kindness of us all. You always have been. Thank you for the service that you gave in Vietnam. I remember how I worried about you all the time. So glad you put yourself in this picture. love ya, peggy

A very appropriate tribute.

Elaine Hancock from Rockville, United States

Hi Denny, this is a wonderful portrait and I really like what you wrote. This day has always had a lot of meaning for me. A few months ago I attended a funeral at Arlington. On this particular day, there were 3 funerals going on right about the same time in Section 60. I thought about this for many weeks after the funeral, about all the men who gave their lives in Viet Nam and now in Iraq and Afghanistan and it was quite upsetting. I also wish peace for you.

Tracy from La Selva Beach, United States

I love this self portrait, but even more, I love the words you've written to go with it. Thank you so much for your service to our Country....and I too hope and pray for a world of tolerance and mutual respect.....But I fear that is a long ways off.....(My son in the Navy takes off in 2 weeks for his first cruise on the USS George Washington- so as his mom I pray for his safety and that of his crew-mates, along with the safety of all our soldiers...I feel like somehow they are all my "kids" out there.

31 May 2011 6:02pm

@Tracy: I know what you mean, Tracy and I was going to ask you how he was doing....We feel the same way about these young women and men...I swear I do NOT know how they do it going back to war zone assignments a second and third time or even heart goes out and my hat goes off....In this shot I have my Vietnam Wall shirt on that I usually only wear on Memorial Day and Veterans Day - thank GOD it still fits over my gut! Thanks Tracy....I wish you all the best and we will keep your son in our thoughts and prayers!! But HEY, Where is YOUR self Portrait????

RBL from Oxford, United States

Touching self portrait, and many thanks to you and many others for serving for us!
Great shot for Memorial Day! Well said too!

Beautiful composition so aptly appropriate for this holiday. A great upward PoV with intriguing frame to make this a bit dreamy.

Ralph Jones from Detroit, United States

Denny, is that you? A beautiful self portrait and fitting tribute to true heroes. I didn't know you are a veteran, and of such an ugly war. I have known many Vietnam vets and listened to many of there stories both about their time at war and the adjustments they had to make coming home from war, wounds both physical and mental that were very slow to heal. Thank you sir for your sacrifices both during the war and after, so that I as well as all Americans can live the "dream".

2 Jun 2011 1:12am

LauraS from Chico, United States

Wonderful self-portrait and words to share. Ralph says it true! Thanks for doing your part and I'm so glad you came home safe. But so many were ruined by the war(s) and we continue to NOT learn from their poor results. I share your sentiment, let's spread peace, but by living it...
PS, nice to meet you!
