"Galen's Puff"

Posted by
Denny Jump (Bellevue, WA, United States) on 16 October 2012 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

Whenever I see clouds like this in a sunset or sunrise setting, I think of that magnificent image by Galen Rowell, of the cloud hovering over Split Rock in California....The cloud in his wonderful picture always struck me as a puff of smoke. So, I decided to call this one "Galen's Puff". .....What a master he was!

OLYMPUS E-510 1/400 second F/3.5 ISO 400 22 mm

** Staples Singers - "Respect Yourself"

- " We do not move forward from a middle opinion, which is undemocratic but mediocratic.
We advance from a creative passion "- (Edgar Morin)

- "To photograph is to hold one's breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It's at
that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy."
- Henri Cartier-Bresson.

::Words from Denny:
- My beliefs, and values, have always been strongly tied-to music, especially Jazz, and Blues.
- The following artists and lyrics seem to "sum-up" where my spirit resides:
; Earth Wind and Fire

Beautiful image Denny. Thank you for the commentary too, I didn't knew this great photographer!

16 Oct 2012 12:59pm

@Denise: Hi Denise...Thank you so much :-) You can see much of Galen Rowells beautiful work by tapping in to the link I have provided you with here - he and his wife, Barbara, died in a small plane crash in Bishop, California in August, 2002...many of the photographer pros on this blog, such as Don Smith worked with Rowell and studied under him... you will probably need to cut and paste these links into your browser. - I am sure that you will enjoy :-)

Gary Hart from California, United States

Great catch, Denny. The second I saw this I thought of Galen Rowell's split rock image, then I read your comments. As you probably know, Galen's image is on the cover of his book, "Mountain Light," which is probably my favorite photography book.

16 Oct 2012 1:28pm

@Gary Hart: Hi Gary - Wow thank you SO much :-) I captured this puppy in true "lazy man" style -right from our daughter's front driveway looking across her rather large yard in Essex Junction, Vermont where they live. Being a "one exposure" kinda guy, My little Olympus E510 is not the greatest at iso capacity so I kept it dark and did not bother with the shadows much during post processing..., in order to keep the noise down and the colours up :-) BYW Your Bristlecone shot from the other day just knocked me off my feet! As always, I just love your work ...All the best, Gary and Thank You so much! :-)

Elaine Hancock from Rockville, United States

Absolutely beautiful and I love the title! I hope you are doing well. I hope that work slows down for you sometime soon. I am doing ok.

Scenes like this are a great food for our souls, and they keep us humble. Truly beautiful.

16 Oct 2012 4:28pm

@Rick: Thanks so much Rick! I really do appreciate that - hope you are doing ok :-)

Ainsley from Derbyshire, United Kingdom

A masterclass in taking a photo of such a wonderful setting. The light on the "free" cloud is wonderful.

16 Oct 2012 5:30pm

@Ainsley: Thanks Ainsley - you are way too kind but I really appreciate your comment here ;-) All the best - DJ

Eric Cousineau from Sherwood Park, Canada

Not remembering, I seared for Galen's Split Rock image and it came right up. I can easily see why you titled this autumn image as you did.
