Every year, when March rolls around, Barbara and I begin to really miss the beautiful western deserts. We always loved visiting them during this time of year.
Here is a look (from Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California) that includes a prominent plant living in the Southern California and Arizona deserts: The Cholla (pronounced "Choy-Yuh"). Caution, Do NOT get too close. It has been said that the needles literally "jump" off the plant and into your boot, or clothing or, heaven forbid, your skin! This may sound quite unbelieveable, but I still don't care to test the theory. The Cholla's needles are like little barbed fish hooks, so when they "enter" whatever it is that they touch, any amount of pulling them back out will result in lots of skin or clothing coming along with it .....Not to speak of the loud screaming.
When in bloom, the chollas have a beautiful little yellow blossom which I will show in the next post....This shot was taken during sunset at Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California during March, 2007. I hope you enjoy :-)
