My Journalism professor at California State University, Sacramento, was William Dorman. Bill was a marvelous and very inspiring man. He encouraged us to "think outside the box" LONG before that phrase was ever coined! He encouraged us to dwell, not on what was being put in front of us as "the truth," but rather, to learn for ourselves what the the message and truth might be. The phrase I can still remember hearing him say was his rendition of a familiar concept dating back to Socrates....Bill would say it like this:"Remember, Confusion is the Pre-Condition to learning!" The point is that, initially, we may be unsure and confused. But if we really study and absorb, and avoid the dogma, that surrounds us sometimes, the confusion will lead to understanding.
For some reason, these icy branches - all crossed up, with the sun shining through them - made me think of Bill. What a brilliant teacher he was.

- " We do not move forward from a middle opinion, which is undemocratic but mediocratic.
We advance from a creative passion "- (Edgar Morin)
- "To photograph is to hold one's breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It's at
that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy."
