The Thing About Snow Geese

Posted by
Denny Jump (Bellevue, WA, United States) on 12 March 2015 in Animal & Insect.

The thing about Snow geese is - they travel down here to Pennsylvania and New Jersey to spend the winter while their home way, up north (mostly in Northern Canada, and Labrador) is totally frozen over. Not good for geese who like to eat. So they travel down this way in hopes of finding good dietary options, like this farm field that looks frozen but still harbors lots of soy and corn kernels in the soil.

The geese also LOVE to hang out on the lakes that we have in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Places like Merrill Creek Reservoir where I visit often at all times of the year. Unfortunately, this year, it was so blasted cold that the lake froze ever forcing the geese to travel further south to find suitable accommodations, i.e. water that is not iced over so much/

Finally today, after checking with the Rangers at Merrill Creek, I was advised that the geese seem to be slowly returning to Merrill Creek, but in much smaller numbers.....That's the thing about Snow Geese - they are beautiful but Very particular.

So, Barbara and I plan to visit Merrill Creek on Sunday to see what we can see...I will report back to you on my findings. Meantime, I hope you enjoy another long distance shot of our beautiful surroundings and those great flocks of geese whom I love so Very much!
