"Is This America?" - Noisy iPhone Shots, Chapter 3

Posted by
Denny Jump (Bellevue, WA, United States) on 23 July 2016 in Landscape & Rural.

As we traveled across the country, we saw many things. We saw Farmlands and cities, shopping centers and factories, open fields and pastures, lakes, rivers, and streams......
When we reached South Dakota and Wyoming, we saw great swaths of open country, just like in the old west movies.....We also saw the results of poverty and the struggle to survive in the open country. We were reminded (as evidenced by this image) of realities that some politicians (?) now running for high office in this country, would much rather move under the carpet - get rid of - ignore! They do not want to admit the reason WHY people still live in such conditions. In fact, they actually want to BLAME all of our troubles on these very people who settled this land in the first place.

I could not help but ask myself, "Is THIS America? Is this TRULY America?!? The land with open arms, welcoming all who enter, yet turning a cold shoulder to those who were here before we even saw it on the horizon?" Those riches served the newcomers, but the riches never reach the REAL Americans...the ones who stood on the shore while those who CLAIMED discovery of this land were actually the immigrants themselves.

is this America??

(I humbly give credit for the title of this piece to Pat Matheny (and I believe Charlie Haden), Musician, composer artist, whose composition "Is This America?" inspired my theme here).

** Staples Singers - "Respect Yourself"

- " We do not move forward from a middle opinion, which is undemocratic but mediocratic.
We advance from a creative passion "- (Edgar Morin)

- "To photograph is to hold one's breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It's at
that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy."
- Henri Cartier-Bresson.

::Words from Denny:
- My beliefs, and values, have always been strongly tied-to music, especially Jazz, and Blues.
- The following artists and lyrics seem to "sum-up" where my spirit resides:
EARTH WIND AND FIRE;
"HOLD ON TO YOUR SPIRIT,
ALWAYS FEEL YOUR SOUL....
HONOR THE MAGIC IN YOUR HEART"
