Looking for Preston

Posted by
Denny Jump (Bellevue, WA, United States) on 23 August 2016 in People & Portrait.

Five years ago today, at 9:05 PM, in McAllen, Texas, USA, my closest Vietnam buddy, Preston "Pip" Powell, lost a battle with a weakening heart and was called home to Heaven...Years earlier, in Vietnam, Preston and I spent nights on ambush patrol, huddling in the mud and rain, with our portable anti-personnel radar. He kept me sane. I kept him awake.
I drove him crazy with my "whisper yakking," as he called it. When it was safer, we talked music, jazz, blues, history, psychology, humanity. and religion....We both returned home in 1968 - but finally, years later, it came time for him to cross over.
Pip (as his family calls him) was a gentle giant and a giving soul....and I owe him a lot.
I guess I will never get over the fact that he is gone. And yes, tears still run when I think about him. But I also smile.....After all, he is up there keeping folks happy just like he did down here.

Peace, my Brother. I miss you.

** Staples Singers - "Respect Yourself"

- " We do not move forward from a middle opinion, which is undemocratic but mediocratic.
We advance from a creative passion "- (Edgar Morin)

- "To photograph is to hold one's breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It's at
that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy."
- Henri Cartier-Bresson.

::Words from Denny:
- My beliefs, and values, have always been strongly tied-to music, especially Jazz, and Blues.
- The following artists and lyrics seem to "sum-up" where my spirit resides:
EARTH WIND AND FIRE;
"HOLD ON TO YOUR SPIRIT,
ALWAYS FEEL YOUR SOUL....
HONOR THE MAGIC IN YOUR HEART"
