Across the Plains - (for Gordon)

Posted by
Denny Jump (Bellevue, WA, United States) on 7 December 2017 in Landscape & Rural.

I was looking through some older images and was inspired by this one because I always think of Gordon Lightfoot when I view it. It is based on my love for Gordon Lightfoot and for every doggone song he wrote and performed....Not even the great Jazz Masters whom I love so madly, can push Gordon off that very top position on the pedestal! Gordon's songs have inspired me so much tfrough the decades....In fact, this makes me think of ALL the beautiful Canadian artists and actors whom I have grown to love - going back for decades....Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Buffy St Marie, Oscar Peterson, Martin Short, John Candy , and on and on and on...
So as we dream at this Great Plains scene, I would simply like to ask that you all think of your favorite artists - wherever they come from - and what they have done for your heart and for your soul...and the love they have shared to all of us in the manner of their artistry <3

** Staples Singers - "Respect Yourself"

- " We do not move forward from a middle opinion, which is undemocratic but mediocratic.
We advance from a creative passion "- (Edgar Morin)

- "To photograph is to hold one's breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It's at
that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy."
- Henri Cartier-Bresson.

::Words from Denny:
- My beliefs, and values, have always been strongly tied-to music, especially Jazz, and Blues.
- The following artists and lyrics seem to "sum-up" where my spirit resides:
EARTH WIND AND FIRE;
"HOLD ON TO YOUR SPIRIT,
ALWAYS FEEL YOUR SOUL....
HONOR THE MAGIC IN YOUR HEART"
; Earth Wind and Fire

Rick from Toronto, Canada

A gorgeously sunlit vista here with exceptional detail and character in the clouds, AND a wonderful sentiment conveyed by your words. This Canadian is smiling, and as a lifelong musician myself I can tell you that I was initially inspired to play guitar and write songs by Gordon and the gang... my uncle Ed was friends with Pee Wee Charles, who played in Lightfoot's band way back then and used to come and jam with my uncle... I'd listen in amazement and stare with envy at my uncle's pre-war Martin guitar, be blown away by Pee Wee's slide playing. My childhood was wrapped in music, primarily jazz due to my dad's love of it. Ben Webster's sax playing was god-like, and the floodgates of my own musical journey opened. You and I both love Coltrane, and I got to see the legendary Ornette Coleman play Massey Hall here some years back. My favourite guitarist is Jeff Beck, for is innovations, unpredictable styles, and sheer emotive expressing. I could type an opus here and will stop myself ! Great post, Denny.

@Rick: Oh! Thank you so much, Rick! I have been going nuts today because I kept running into things that prevented me from responding to you - When I wrote the above piece last night, I was thinking about you. I was certain that it would likely strike a note (pun intended) with you and I am Honored to know that it did....I also had a childhood filled with learning about jazz and Blues , mostly, and rock and folk later on...and just music in general...My ears prevent me now from pounding on my beloved drums but that's ok. I live Vicariously through wonderful friends like you. Later, when I entered college (following my Army/Vietnam days) I was fortunate to have a thrice weekly nighttime Jazz show on the University radio FM station and I had lots of fun spinning LP's of my favorite beautiful Artists, like Ornette, Mingus, Trane, Bobby Hutchierson, Milt Jackson,, Jack DeJohnette, Cal Trader, Mongo Santamaria....MG the list goes on, doesn't it? What a thrill it must have been for you to see, watch, and hear Pee Wee and All those wonderful musicians as they jammed with your uncle...So Awesome! Jeff Beck - I completely agree with you - unmatched...Such a stratospheric style and so inventive...>>>I need to stop as well...but it is so thrilling to have one on AM3 to connect in this way....I know others are out there....but this old geezer is proud to know you! Thanks Sir ;-)
