Long Days' Journey into Night - Our Trip Home

Posted by
Denny Jump (Bellevue, WA, United States) on 25 February 2018 in Transportation.

So, here you see a shot looking north on U.S. Interstate Highway 5 in Southern Oregon, as we try to return to our home near Seattle from Northern California....a distance of approximately 780 miles. You may have gathered that we are stopped in a very long line....If this was your guess, you are right! In fact, the line in front of us consisted of hundreds and hundreds of automobiles and Trucks....covering almost 2 solid miles of vehicles!!

What was the reason for all this? Well, a sudden snow storm struck the western coast of the Oregon, Washington, dumping 3-4 inches of snow overnight in areas that were not accustomed to dealing with that kind of sudden snowfall on a major highway.

The amount of snow would seem minimal to states and provinces in the mid west and east... but the type and amount of snow abatement and removal equipment that exists in the western states and provinces, is simply not geared to handle snow and ice in this manner.

So there we sat....for hours, creeping ever so slowly - one mile was covered in 15 minutes....It was terrible....

Thank goodness, we are home now...glad to be here, as well.

@Existence Artistique: Yes indeed ;-) <3

franz from Baden, Austria

Poor you ... stuck in traffic for hours! But at least you were inside the car (heater on, I hope ...) and could 'admire' the elements from a warm place ... ;-)
Glad you made it home safely! Let's hope spring will be on its way soon ... can't be too long any more! Meanwhile, we had lots of snow (last week) and really cold spell (this week)!
